(Eleuthera, Bahamas) Concerning the upcoming National Report Card day this week on Thursday, June 23rd, 2016, Superintendent of Education for the Eleuthera District, Mrs. Helen Simmons-Johnson commented recently, saying, “The Department of Education in Eleuthera wishes to encourage all of the parents in the District to ensure that come the 23rd of June, on National Report Card day, that every parent presents him or herself, and every guardian of our students should show up at their school which his or her child attends.”
She highlighted, “It is of paramount importance for our high school students – in particular those students in the 9th, 10th and 11th grades – parents need to know what it is their child or children are deficient in as we move towards the National High School Diploma. The first recipients of the National High School Diploma will receive them in 2017. Those certificates are not going to be issued by schools and districts. They are going to be issued by the Central Education Authority.”
Mrs. Simmons-Johnson added, “So if you want to make sure that your child has done everything, show up to the school, and speak to the homeroom teachers, speak to the principal, ask questions, and get answers, so you know what it is your child should begin working on come this summer. This is no longer time for us to be idle as parents if we want to help our students to succeed. We have to do what we are supposed to do as parents, because that is the only way we are going to ensure that our children have a better life. We are not asking anybody for handouts, it’s available to them. School is work. Check and see if they are doing the work, and doing it at the level they are expected to do it at.”
