(Eleuthera, Bahamas) – Residents of Eleuthera and in particular James’ Cistern (JC) in Central Eleuthera are on this Saturday 13th, September 2014, mourning the tragic death of Shayne Thompson an 18-year-old male (age correction) of that community who became the island’s latest traffic fatality.
It all happened at about 12:30am, when the young man was travelling south along Queen’s Highway in JC and lost control of his vehicle. Officers from the Governor’s Harbour Police Station responded to the scene where they discovered that a silver colored 2000 Chevy Cavalier L/P#266538 had come to a rest on the western side of the street facing a southwest direction with extensive damages to the front section and left side.
Additionally, they discovered that the driver of the vehicle was in the driver’s seat with his upper body pressed against the backseat area of the vehicle and his legs pinned under the dashboard due to the impact; he appeared to be lifeless. Eleuthera fire services assisted in extricating the driver from the vehicle at which time he was officially pronounced dead by Dr. John Mensah. The deceased was later transported to the morgue at Harbour Island. Investigations are ongoing.
In this March 2013 photo Mr. Shayne Thompson, is receiving a Bahamas Outstanding Student award as a Grade 12 student with a G.P.A greater than 3.0. He was presented with his award by Mr. Kirkwood Cleare of the Ministry of Education, Eleuthera District.
It should be noted that young Thompson was a 2013 graduate of Central Eleuthera High School, and was the only male to graduate on the Honour Roll that year. He was also the Head Boy of the school.
One of two gentlemen of the community, helping to clean debris from the road on Saturday morning, Mr. Ferguson, recalled the young victim as a very helpful member of the community who was always willing to lend assistance to older citizens. He also remembered him as an active member of the church who played the drums. At that hour on Saturday morning he was apparently returning home from a short distance away at Big Rock where he had been assisting with preparations for a medical fund raising event, planned for Saturday, in support of a member of the community.
