C Force is pleased to announce the upcoming release of their newest compact disc entitled Deep Blue.
Deep Blue is a reflection of C Force’s commitment to the preservation and promotion of art music from The Bahamas and the neighboring Caribbean region. It is a compilation of original compositions, transcriptions, and arrangements of pieces written in a classical vein while manifesting elements of Bahamian folk culture in the use of theme, rhythm, and melody. As The Bahamas celebrates its 40th year of Independence, Deep Blue features a combination of works by Bahamian composers and poets as well as pieces inspired by the islands of The Bahamas and their surrounding waters. Included on the disc are works by E. Clement Bethel, Franz Hepburn, K. Quincy Parker, Christian Justilien, Terry Manning, and Lucas Manning. Also featured are artwork by John Cox, poetry by Marion Bethel, and photography by Jeff Major.
Of special interest on Deep Blue is the Bahama Islands Suite. Composed by Christian Justilien for C Force in 2012, Bahama Islands Suite is a five-movement work that vividly captures the discovery, historical events, and the spirit of the islands of The Bahamas. Each movement depicts a different island from the Bahamian archipelago, with the featured islands being: San Salvador, Grand Bahama, Eleuthera, Ragged Island, and Bimini. Because of the programmatic nature, evocative themes, and lyrical nature of Justilien’s Bahamas Island Suite, C Force was inspired to approach Bahamian poet and writer Marion Bethel with the idea of composing a set of poetry to serve as a companion piece to the musical suite. The resulting collection of poems, written by Bethel in 2013, lends itself perfectly as a set of texts to accompany the musical collection, but also serves as a stunning stand-alone set of works. The integration of lyrics and music of both versions of the Bahama Islands Suite sets a new standard of synthesis for Bahamian chamber music.
Deep Blue was recorded in May 2013 in the Performing Arts Centre of The College of The Bahamas and produced, engineered, and mastered by Terry Manning.
C Force ensemble members Christine Gangelhoff, Christian Justilien, and Christy Lee are all faculty members at The College of The Bahamas in Nassau on the island of New Providence.
