(Eleuthera, Bahamas) – The Eleutheran visited the scene of an accident in Rock Sound on Thursday between a young South Eleuthera female driving a blue SUV and a family of tourists driving in a white SUV.  According to authorities the visitors had recently arrived on the island, and were driving on the wrong side of the road (the Right) when the head-on collision occurred. No one was reported as being seriously injured in the accident, though both parties visited the local clinic.

“ROAD SAFETY” has been a major theme on the island, since the spate of deadly accidents earlier in the year and a big part of that campaign has been the placement of “KEEP LEFT” stickers in Rental (SD) vehicles.  In this situation however, the message would not have reached the tourists since their car had a private plate. The car belongs to the owners (second home owners) of the residence the visitors are ‘renting’ while on the island.

Its a practice that is common and among other things, bypasses the rental car industry on the island.

Note: Legitimate rental cars on the island carry an “SD” (Self Drive) plate.  To obtain a Self Drive Franchise an applicant must submit a completed Self Drive Franchise Application Form to the Franchise Unit of the Road Traffic Department and await approval by the Road Traffic Authority Board.

KEEP LEFT.
