The Department of Environmental Health Services (DEHS) in Eleuthera has advised of the following tentative schedule for Fogging exercises to control mosquitoes and other pests, present as a result of the recent rainfall.  This schedule is subject to change depending on weather conditions. Min. Kenred Dorsett, Ministry of the Environment and Housing noted in a Press statement on Monday that “The chemicals used to control mosquitoes and other pests will not be effective unless weather conditions are conducive.  This chemical is most effective when it makes contact with the pests and insects, therefore it should not be used during rain or in winds above 10 miles per hour.”

Tips for residents to aid with the control of mosquitoes and other pests:

  1. Wear long sleeves in the evenings or times when mosquitoes are out
  2. Ensure that windows and doors are fitted with screens to prevent entry of mosquitoes
  3. Cover all water holding containers tightly
  4. Turn down all empty containers
  5. Seal septic tanks and soak-aways properly
  6. Dispose of garbage and refuse at the designated dumpsites, these include derelict vehicles, old tires and old buckets, bottles  and cans, discarded refrigerators etc.
  7. Change the water in flower vases every other day to prevent mosquito breeding and to remove eggs
  8. Burn mosquito coils, the smoke from the coil will kill the adult mosquito
  9. Use mosquito nets and insect repellents to protect from mosquito bites
