(Eleuthera, Bahamas) Cable Bahamas Ltd announced on Thursday April 18th the expansion of digital TV, broadband Internet and telephone service to residents in Wemyss Bight, who through their own initiative, after years of being neglected, lobbied to have the Cable company come to the settlement with the needed services. In September of 2012 a letter addressed to the Bahamas’ Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA) and copied to media outlets, highlighted the plight of the residents of Wemyss Bight.
As the company celebrates its expansion to Wemyss Bight it is important to note that residents in the Balara Bay surburb of Governor’s Harbour, north of Workers House and home to a number of businesses and homes, who have on two previous occasions submitted signed petitions to the company, do not have service.
In their release, Thomas A. Sands Jr., CEO/director, Rock Sound Properties Limited is quoted as stating, “We have made significant investments in Eleuthera to grow our businesses and create opportunities for the wider community. Connectivity throughout the island of Eleuthera is essential, not only to local businesses but also to those that would choose to visit our shores. I am pleased to see Cable Bahamas expanding its network to Wemyss Bight. Access to a more efficient and reliable network will support the continued growth of businesses and delivery of service to clients at a level they are used to when at home.”
Business owners and residents in Balara Bay, located in the north Governor’s Harbour area lament the fact that the Company to date has not delivered in extending their network that would, as is stated, support the continued growth of businesses and delivery of service to their clients.
It should be also noted that some operations of the Eleutheran News Agency are directly affected by this. Currently the only option for internet and telephone service is BTC and in the event that their service is down, which happened for about 24 hours from Thursday to Friday noon, April 18th to 19th, impacts are immediate and alternative options non-existent.
Cable Bahamas asserts that it “has put the community of Wemyss Bight on par with major cities in America and the United Kingdom.”
Other areas of the island and the dozens of homes in the north Governor’s Harbour suburbs are also anxiously awaiting the same.
