(Eleuthera, Bahamas) – Commissioner of the Royal Bahamas Police Force, Ellison Greenslade traveled to North Eleuthera this morning from New Providence with the fire chief, along with two investigators, to probe the destructive fire that burnt through a building at the North Eleuthera High School housing several rooms including the Physical Education room, the Geography and Social Sciences room as well as the school’s Library, which also held a number of computers, printers and a brand new Promethean Board recently received from the Ministry of Education.
The team arrived at the site from about 8:00am on Monday morning, March 25th, 2013, while the building still smouldered and at about 11:30am Commissioner Greenslade gave a press briefing, declaring the findings of his team; that the fire was the work of the an ARSONIST.
He stated: ” Based on the reports that they [the fire chief and investigators] have given me, and based on the evidence that we have recovered, we are satisfied that this is the work of an arsonist.”
Commissioner Greenslade further stated, “It was not just a natural event,” and he appealed for members of the community to, “Please tell us what they know about this fire.”
“We believe that the person or persons who did this will be known in the community and so we are appealing to people, as I said with a good conscience to please call us and let us know – tell us anonymously who did this, so that we can prevent this happening again,” he said.
The Commissioner added that he was really nervous that if they are unable to solve this arson soon there is a potential for further problems in this same regard.
He commended the good work of the team of volunteer firefighters, members of the community, police, principal Michael Culmer and MP for North Eleuthera Theo Neilly, for containing the fire to the central section of the school block, which was burnt completely.
