7:37am: (Eleuthera, Bahamas) – Residents of Lower Bogue, North Eleuthera, woke on Monday morning March 25th, 2013, to the sight and smell of smoke rising from the heart of the High School in the District. Fire completely destroyed a building at the center of the compound at North Eleuthera High School in the early morning hours with only a frame remaining as the sun rose.
The block which was gutted by the flames housed the Physical Education room, the Geography and Social Sciences room as well as the school’s Library, which also held a number of computers, printers and a brand new Promethean Board recently received from the Ministry of Education.
The cause of the blaze, which reportedly began shortly before 4am is unknown.
Principal of the school, Michael Culmer and MP for North Eleuthera, Theo Neilly, were among those present on the grounds during the early morning lending assistance to the volunteer fire fighters who managed to prevent the fire from spreading beyond the one building.
Police said in their early morning release that a team of officers from Fire Services New Providence will travel to Eleuthera to assist their colleagues with the investigations.
