GH Foreshore and Cupids Cay
Governor’s Harbour foreshore and Cupid’s Cay

Updated: Monday, September 16th, 2013

Member of Parliament for Central and South Eleuthera and Minister of State for Legal Affairs, Damian Gomez, shared with The Eleutheran on Sunday, September 15th, 2013, that he has begun the process of proposing the construction of a Marina in the vicinity of the Governor’s Harbour foreshore, opposite Laughing Bird Cay and south of Cupid’s Cay.

Gomez outlined his intention, saying, “I would like to push the restoration, beautification of Cupid’s Cay and the foreshore of Governor’s Harbour while providing a beach rejuvenated by dredged sand, a boardwalk and marina.”

He explained that, if public support was forthcoming, he hoped to persuade Cabinet to acquire the necessary funding from the Chinese Government; approximately $18 million.

Some of the details of the proposal, included the creation of docking facilities for up to 100 boats ranging in length from 25 to 150 feet, as well as provisions for shops, boutiques, cafes and restaurants.  As described, the project would also include boardwalks, improved beaches and a clean-up facelift of historic Cupid’s Cay.

The public is being invited to express their views and give feedback on the proposal.  Specifically, whether they approve of the proposal or not, as well as if there are specific changes they would like to see and why.  Emailed responses can be sent directly to Minister Gomez at (dalglaw@gmail.com).

Previous Cupid’s Cay Marina Proposals

In October of 2010, developers Michael Taglich and Steven Dileo of the Manhattan & Island Development Corp. LLC met with members of the Governor’s Harbour and wider Eleuthera community to propose a much smaller, $1.5 million Marina facility on Cupid’s Cay.

Also in 2010, the now deceased prominent local attorney Lloyd Johnson shared with The Eleutheran that he along with partners had submitted a proposal for a concept similar to Taglich and Dileo’s in 2006, and at the time communicated his awareness of a number of feasibility issues, including the need for a “splash wall” between Laughing Bird Cay and Cupid’s Cay, as well as a “dredged turnaround basin”.
